Even So, It is Well…

The fourth stanza of Horatio Spafford’s profound hymn “It Is Well With My Soul” declares:

“And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,

The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;

The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend,

Even so, it is well with my soul.”

The “Even So” of Faith

The most powerful phrase is “even so”—meaning “despite everything” or “nevertheless” or “in light of all this”:

For Spafford it means . . .

  • Even though I buried my children
  • Even though I don’t understand God’s timing
  • Even though faith is hard and sight would be easier
  • Even though the trumpet means judgment as well as joy
  • Even though cosmic upheaval is terrifying

EVEN SO, it is well with my soul.

This is the faith that pleases God (Hebrews 11:6).

This is the confidence that “whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord” (Romans 14:8).

This is the assurance that nothing “will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:39).

I want to respond in the midst of life’s crises, challenges, and confusions . . .

“Even So, It is Well with my soul.”

And each of us can – Because of Jesus….
